WA Registration Plates

Vehicles throughout Western Australia may contain registration plates denoting the place of registration or be related to an organisation, shire or district. This is originally by the use of up to three letters followed by numbers. The colour scheme of the plates is governed by the model of plate or if a regional plate modified if the owner has re-ordered the number plate.

Western Australian Modern Format

In the late 1990’s WA Government moved to the current plate format, 1AAA-XXX. These are provided state wide and not tied to any regions. We’ve had a number of queries on the age of these plates as they’re released – See below a very rough timeline.

  • 1BFT – September 2002
  • 1DEG – 2009
  • 1GLG – July 2017

Shire Councils / Districts (jump to)
A new series of local Shire plates was launched in 1993 and are designed to promote local pride and enable the generation of revenue for certain community projects in a particular area. The plates have one to five numeric characters on the left hand side followed by the multi-colour local authority logo and one to three local authority identifying alpha characters on the right hand side with an optional slogan across the bottom. The number of numeric characters depends on the number of local authority alpha characters with the total number of characters being six.

Organisations / Charities (jump to)

In the 1990s the State Government allowed the registration of registration plate series for organisations or charities. The general principal was the same as the Shire Councils/Districts allowing the organisation/charity to use the funding from the number plate purchases for their own commitments.

In the future I hope to have a ready to print booklet for your car – When travelling you can answer those questions on where vehicles may hail from!

If you can add another confirmed number plate to the list please contact me so I can ever increase the data store.

Thanks goes to RegionalWA for the original source of information and the contributions of several, in particular Carolyn Stan-Bishop.

Answers

  • Have you any records  or idea of how to age registration plates by the size of the dot, eg:  Y…40 mm dot… 444 , or Y…70 mm dot…444 , etc.
    • The old WA shire plates issued from 1920 to 1945 had a 3″ (76mm) dot, from 1945 to 1956 a 1 1/2″ (38mm)  dot. The 1956 series plates (the first to have WA included in the top centre) have a 38mm dot. Smaller dots were used to accommodate more numbers. Low numbers are reissued, so it’s impossible to ascertain date of issue.

  • BM (Broome) plates while travelling in the North & would like to know what the 2 small T’s (tt) denotes on some of these plates?
    • BM(Broome) registration plates with ‘tt’ denotes that it is a hire care from the Thrifty franchise owner in Darwin. You’ll see more of these in the Northern Territory. Geoff

  • What year would the western Australian licence plate USS386 come out?
    • USE-000 to XBS-881 were issued in 1972
